The trailing edge

White-tailed Deer (juveniles).

Calm and damp this morning, but the day still had a little rain in it. Small, spattering showers floated by in late morning and early afternoon, then a lull, then more showers tonight. But it was nowhere near the gully-washer we had yesterday, so Jack and I got back on the hill—as it happens, between the little showers.

Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 24 October 2014.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Juncos up there still, and sparrows, and a flicker, but fewer yellow-rumps. The foliage is past peak now—especially what with all that wind and rain—and the landscape has begun to go a ruddy sort of brown.

On our return trip, at the end of South Street, I watched a Great Blue Heron lift slowly out of a meadow across the road.

Later, leaving work on Meadow Street, we came upon a little family of deer: a mother and two youngsters. They seemed kind of overly tame, in fact, not spooking even when I got slowly out of the truck to take photos. Only when I let Jack jump out—“Jack, no,” I had to caution him (or the chase would’ve been on)—did they skedaddle on into the trees. Jack, ears up, watched them go.

Pretty sure this has is the trailing edge of the nor’easter, which is liable to go down as a memorably prodigious period of rain.
