Appendix

Thursday, February 18th, 2010
Looking west, Glen Cove, Rockport, Maine, 18 February 2010.

Looking west.

This was a gorgeous one. Part clouds, part sun, temperatures well up into the 40s (F). Chickadees in the woods out back. This was a bicycle-riding day—or would’ve been, if not for my nagging abdominal pain. I awoke with it this morning. I don’t get sick much, don’t much mind little aches and pains. But this one seemed different, sort of lingered in the lower-right part of my gut. A quick Google search confirmed appendicitis as a possibility.

I did manage to take a drive to town, where I managed to count the usual species—crow, herring and ring-billed gulls, rock pigeons. A great wheel of gulls circled the little cattle yard up at Rockville Street, scraps of white against a patch of blue.

Cut to the chase: I had my appendix out this evening at about 7:30 p.m. Dr. Paine did the honors—a friend and expert surgeon. He told me I should be able to go home in the morning.

Today’s List

Black-capped chickadee
American crow
Herring gull
Ring-billed gull
Rock pigeon
