Wild turkeys

Southeast sky.

I didn’t sleep a lot last night, but not because of pain. (I felt pretty darn pain-free, in fact, thanks to Dr. Paine.) Seems after you have your appendix removed, the nurses have to wake you up every hour or two to make sure you’re still alive. But I must give props to the nursing staff at Penobscot Bay Medical Center. They were sweet, friendly, and forever wanted to know if I needed anything.

More sky.

Sometimes they’d do something for me even if I didn’t ask. Like when a CNA named Katie opened the curtains in my room, revealing a little tree-studded yard with a forested plot beyond. Soon after, I saw movement out there and turned my head in time to see a small flock of wild turkeys hurrying along. Nice to know you can bird even from a hospital bed—on the fiftieth day of the year, my fiftieth species.

I also saw crows and a black-capped chickadee out there. And some gray and red squirrels. But, man, was I antsy to get home.

Which I finally did, at about 2 p.m. Drove myself.

Didn’t feel much like taking my daily hike, though. So I took a couple photos of the sky.

Today’s List

American crow
Wild turkey
Black-capped chickadee
Herring gull
