Supposed to snow this weekend. We could end up with a foot or more. Today, though, was all about the short, clear, cold days leading up the solstice. Fact is, these days usually aren’t all that frigid—but on my Beech Hill hike with Jack today, I noticed a film of ice covering Chickawaukie Lake already. The lake tends to freeze over by New Year’s, but not usually this early.
Anyway, it was cold up there. Met a couple of fellow hikers, surprisingly, but saw no birds. Until, that is, from the summit, through my binoculars, I scanned the trees off toward the bay, where I spotted a little wheel of gulls.
