Two harriers

Northern harriers.

When the days grow shortest, my busy-ness seems to peak. But dog and I did manage our usual mid-afternoon hike up Beech Hill.

The bay from Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 December 2013.

The bay.

Damn cold up there today, but not too breezy. Ran into a little flock of chickadees right away, but the real excitement came a little while later, when I saw first one, then a pair of harriers diving and lifting near the summit slopes. Watched them for a little while as they split up and headed down different sides of the hill.

Otherwise, the rising moon was nice, and the ruddy barrens, and the blue bay.

Heard a titmouse on our way back into the parking lot.

It’s a cold night. A cold few days to come.
