Clear day. Blue, blue sky. Bit of a breeze. Warm enough that I figured Jack and I would take the wooded Beech Hill trail today. Being on the north side of the hill, it was mostly slush, but that’s OK. Counted a few winter deadfalls, saw turkey tracks, noticed a few places where winter hikers veered off trail. Pretty quiet and birdless, but I did see a chickadee.
Coming over the summit, I spotted a little hawk fluttering then wheeling, fluttering then wheeling. A sharp-shinned. Also saw distant gulls. Down at the other trailhead, I heard a flicker and the repeated barks of a daytime barred owl.
Robins on the sumac on our return. And the call of a mourning dove as we wrapped things up.
Worked up a good sweat. Long hike, nice day.
