During the night last night, the sky clouded over, and during the day today, the temperature dipped. And in afternoon, a little drizzle flew in on a westerly wind. About the time that happened, Jack and I were just beginning our daily Beech Hill hike. We encountered a good-sized gang of young people in the parking lot but no gangs of birds. In fact, I heard a solitary nuthatch and nothing else until we got about half-way up the hill, when I heard the caw of a crow.
The sky looked clear away to the south, beyond the lake, beyond the cement plant. Perhaps Monhegan had sun. But there on the summit, the wind whipped up, and the dark rusty hill contrasted with the slate-gray distant bay.
A few other hikers in blaze-orange attire were starting up as we were about finished with our brisk walk. Above them I saw chickadees and nuthatches and a few interesting slate-gray clouds.
In thinking back on the day just now, it occurs to me that slate-gray might just be my favorite color.
