“Yoodle-oo”

Sunday, November 18th, 2012
Eastern bluebird, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 18 November 2012.

Eastern bluebird.

Bluebirds say “yoodle-oo.” Or maybe “loo-loo,” or “yoo-loo.” I’m getting familiar with the faint little falsetto notes they make when flitting around together about on a new-mown coastal hill. I saw a small flock yesterday and another today in exactly the same place—in the little birches and on the field stubble on either side of the open Beech Hill trail. I watched them forage in the fields and on the trail itself. I watched them perch on small sticks and weed stems—in fact, it almost seemed like the perching bird acted as a lookout while the others browsed low to the ground.

More bluebirds.

I also heard a raven and a flicker and a few other species. Jack and I met several other humans and dogs. No coots visible out in Chickawaukie Lake, although I bet they’re still there somewhere.

But at the moment I can’t find the right words to describe the light, hopeful feeling bluebirds give me. Especially during these times of longer nights. I can understand why they inspire a lot of songs.

Starry, starry night tonight (speaking of songs).
