Laughing gulls, etc.

Hermit thrush, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 14 August 2012.

Hermit thrush.

A day much like yesterday. In fact, a lot less active. I limped around, got a few things done. Hired a neighbor to mow my lawn. As we chatted afterward, I noticed a loose flock of laughing gulls pass overhead. They were after some kind of winged insects, in the wake of some kind of hatch. You could see them veer and snag their prey. I’ve seen laughing gulls do that many times before.

Walked the wooded Beech Hill loop today with Jack. Slowly. Saw few birds, heard several. Then, on our return trip, I heart the alarm note of a thrush of some kind. Turned out to be a hermit thrush—a young one, I think. Managed a crappy photo, displayed here for your edification.

Other than the mosquitos and deer flies and my ongoing education about broken ribs, that’s about it.
