The Day Before the Storm

Monday, March 13th, 2017
Common Raven, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2017.

Common Raven.

The day before the storm
A pair of ravens flew
One at a time across the sky,
Each muttering magic calls
Of “glug” and “cluck” and “cu.”

White-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2017.

White-breasted Nuthatch.

Before tomorrow’s storm
A Northern Cardinal sang,
As did a Black-capped Chickadee
And a Brown-headed Cowbird—
First cowbird of the year.

Before new snow piles up
My dog Jack and I hiked
Among ten hopeful bird species,
Singing, anticipating
The coming equinox.

Woo-hoo!

Sunday, March 12th, 2017
Tufted Titmouse, Rockport, Maine, 12 March 2017.

Tufted Titmouse.

Northern Cardinal, Rockport, Maine, 12 March 2017.

Northern Cardinal.

Slightly warmer, slightly less windy, with everything happening slightly earlier (thanks a lot, Daylight Saving Time). Brilliant sun, no clouds to speak of. The birds seemed active out back at home, with the most notable sighting a first-of-year woodcock, which Jack and I flushed from a sunny leaf-covered edge—but not before we’d approached to within about ten or twelve feet of it.

Calling cardinal, titmouse and turkey.

Warming through the day. A big storm a-comin’ in a couple days—a foot and a half of snow possible.

Woo-hoo!

Gimme Shelter

Saturday, March 11th, 2017
Out of the wind, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 March 2017.

Out of the wind.

As I write this, at 10:20 p.m. (EST, which will be changing to EDT in four or five hours), the temperature out there is 1° (F), and the wind’s still blowing.

This morning, when first awoke, the thermometer showed 6°. About forty-five minutes later, as Jack and I headed out for a hike, it read 5°. It hasn’t risen since.

Coldest, quickest Beech Hill hike of the winter so far for Jack and me.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. (EST), I hiked the open trail.

2. American Crow
