Different kind of day

Tuesday, February 19th, 2013
Cone, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 19 February 2013.

Cone.

A different kind of day. Turning overcast. Warmish. Little wind. Kind of the opposite of yesterday.

Early, on my first trip out with Jack, I filled out most of my bird list: finch, titmouse, crow, gull. Later, hiking Beech Hill, I saw a large flock of robins. Also had to tippy-toe my way along the trail, now slick with white ice where snow used to be.

Tonight it’s raining.

Raw wind

Monday, February 18th, 2013
American robin, Glen Cove, Rockport, Maine, 18 February 2013.

American robin.

This day had no clouds in it. None that I saw, anyway—just a ripe, rich, empty blue. Step outside, though, and you were liable to get blown away.

Yesterday’s winds might’ve been stronger, and of course snow was involved. But the wind today had a clean, raw, bone-biting quality to it. Plus, it was coming from a slightly different direction, maybe north-northwest. Jack and I kept out of it for most of the day—most of my birding I did from the back deck, where I saw robins and starlings and heard chickadees—but we braved the chill at the end of it, as is our custom.

Fine, dry snow had filled the low spots on the trail, so a little slogging was involved, but mostly we crunched along on hard, icy pack. The snow patterns were interesting. I saw a distant herring gull soaring out toward the bay, the only bird on my Beech List Hill today.

Tonight a half moon is setting over the hill out back, with Jupiter tagging along nearby.

Big blow

Sunday, February 17th, 2013
Snow dog, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 17 February 2013.

Snow dog.

Another blizzard blew through today—nowhere near the snowfall as last weekend, but winds at least as high. Higher, if my own observation is any indication. Stayed inside for most of it, revising. Finally bundled up and headed out with Jack.

The wind at the summit of Beech Hill was wild. Great, long periods of steady, roaring blow—45 or 50 miles an hour or more. With temperatures about 20 degrees (F), that made things nippy. And Jack absolutely loved it in the wind. It made him want to run and jump and nip at my wrists and elbows. Crazy dog.
