Northern harrier.
Dog and I got to the hill late in the day—a sub-freezing day, with ice underfoot. Early in our quick hike up, I spotted a solitary northern harrier flying low over the southern slope, the its wings flashing orange in the light of the setting sun. The hawk looked right at us, then cruised stealthily at treetop level above a grove of hardwoods and off to the west. As I watched it, I thought, “I love moments like these.”
