Slippery hike

Thursday, January 19th, 2012
Single file, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 19 January 2012.

Single file.

Cold morning. Eight degrees (F). When I first stepped out early with two dogs, I thought I heard a blue jay’s cry—but it turned out to be the two-note spring song of a titmouse. This was soon followed by a chickadee’s unmistakable fee-bee! love song. Guess. the temperature doesn’t matter so much as the increasing photoperiod.

Nobody else hazarded the icy open Beech Hill trail but me, Jack, and Boone. But that’s OK. Each of the dogs went down, but I didn’t. And they’re a lot closer to the ground.

Bone-chilling

Bay sky, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 18 January 2012.

Bay sky.

Warm enough early, but cooling off fast. By the time two dogs and I started our climb up Beech Hill, the temperature had hit about 20 degrees (F) and was headed down. Oh, and it was really, really windy. By far the coldest day of the season.

Shadows, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 18 January 2012.

Just saying.

Respite

View of the bay.

Something of a respite today. Light snow in the morning—no more than an inch or so—and then warming to maybe 40 degrees (F). Don’t know that for sure, but it sure felt like it. Snow stopped. A splash or two of sun was all, then a blue overcast. I drove with two dogs to do errands, and the we three all ended up at Beech Hill.

Australian cattle dogs, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 17 January 2012.

Australian cattle dogs.

Birds right away. Chickadee, brown creeper. Caught sight of both in the trees around the parking lot. Coming up along the road, I heard the voice of a goldfinch. Then up and over the slushy hill, serenaded the whole way by the cries of flickers. On our return, we stopped. Quiet. Then the faint beeps of a nuthatch. And back near the parking lot, the voice of a hairy woodpecker.

Six birds today in about a half-hour on an open coastal hill. Not bad for January.
