Long-tailed Ducks

Thursday, February 8th, 2018
Long-tailed Duck, Rockport Harbor, Maine, 07 February 2018.

Long-tailed Duck.

I hiked the hill before the storm
and saw or heard a few small birds
but none would pose for photographs
so I took a spin to the harbor

where long-tailed ducks were diving here
and there and buffleheads, mallards,
and black ducks hung with herring gulls
but the long-tailed ducks were my favorite

Portrait of a Chickadee

Wednesday, January 24th, 2018
Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 24 January 2018.

Black-capped Chickadee.

I hiked an icy hill with Jack
And didn’t fall down once because
Of my trusty new grippers.
And chickadee sat for
A portrait by me.

Woodpeckers

Monday, December 18th, 2017
Hairy Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 18 December 2017.

Hairy Woodpecker.

I hiked the hill
before the snow.
Encountered three
woodpeckers there—
hairy, downy,
pileated.
The former two
were dueling.
Just heard the voice
of the latter.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
