Sunny morning. Crows about. Titmouse out back, and a chickadee. Across the road, a house finch sang. Saw a herring gull floating high off to the east. I hear a winter storm is on its way—supposed to arrive early tomorrow.
Long, frustrating day. But I managed some desk work, a trip to the bank and grocery, a visit to the auto shop, and (finally), a hike up Beech with Jack. We didn’t get there until just past 5.
No one else up there, which wasn’t surprising. No birds, either, that I could hear or see. Clouds had moved in by then—some with a purple-ornage tinge from the light of the sun setting somewhere to the southwest. The trail was slick and lumpy. Dog and I both slipped and slid but never did fall completely over.
Not much wind, but a little. Temps in the low-30s (F), I’d guess. Didn’t think I’d need my heavy jacket, and I guess I didn’t really, but it would’ve been a little more comfortable.
Heard house sparrows on our return.
Tonight, the temperature hasn’t dipped much. There’s a thawy feel to everything, crunchy snow underfoot. Here on the coast I imagine will get a little rain with tomorrow’s promised snow.
Beech Hill List
Beginning at 5 p.m., I hiked the open trail.
