Southbound

Autumn landscape, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 11 October 2010.

Autumn landscape.

Warmer and stiller than yesterday. I thought I might’ve overdressed by pulling on my insulated hoodie—but that was about perfect for the bare summit of a coastal Maine hill on a clear morning in pretty near mid-October.

Canada geese, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 11 October 2010.

Canada geese.

Thanks to the stillness, right from the parking lot I was able to hear a jay, a crow, a chickadee, a catbird, and a couple of yellow-rumps. As Jack and I climbed the open trail, a small bird flitted across in front of us; I finally made it out, backlit by the rising sun, a solitary song sparrow. And not much farther up, another sparrow—this time a white-throat—flitted across and said tseet!

Still a lot of ‘rumps about, but seemingly not as many as yesterday. I thought I heard a creeper and a raven, but I couldn’t be sure. I did hear a robin, a titmouse, and a flock of geese. The geese flew in a line against the bay off to the east, southbound.

A lot of birds are that these days.
