Had some work stuff to do, so dog and I didn’t hit the trails until midday. Snow squalls mixed with sun, temps right around freezing. Very quiet, bird-wise, with only four species on my mountain list (although I did spy nine mule deer browsing up their usual slope)—but one in particular was fun.
Talkin’ ’bout the Canyon Wren I heard down in the gultch. It was calling from little nooks in a wall of rock up maybe fifty feet off the trail. Decided to head that way, see if I could spot it (Jack following quietly). By golly, I did.
(Poor little dude was puffed up against the chill.)
