Quail

California Quail (male and chicks), East Millcreek, Utah, 12 August 2019.
California Quail (male shielding chicks).

Stayed home today for the most part. Still organizing things after the move. Cool mornings and evenings, not dry middays. And California Quail all over the place.

I’d never seen one before I moved to Salt Lake City. I’ve seen them pretty much every day since. Come to find out that’s all because of a couple of purposeful releases of this farther-west species back in the 1800s. They’ve got a thriving suburban population here. I understand there are even relocation teams because they’re becoming a nuisance in places (real or perceived).

I sure haven’t yet tired of seeing and hearing these dapper little birds, though.

East Millcreek List

1. Eurasian Collared Dove
2. House Finch
3. Black-billed Magpie
4. Mourning Dove
5. California Quail
6. Rock Pigeon
