Bird baths

Monday, January 18th, 2016
January sun, near Mount Battie, Camden, Maine, 18 January 2016.

January sun.

This is the first time I’ve lived in a house with a little brook flowing out back. It’s a lovely little yard, a tiny, winding brook, and birds love to bathe in it. I’ve seen doves bathe in it and titmice and goldfinches. Lately, it’s been goldfinches, even though the temperature is sub-freezing.

Today I watched a goldfinch splash around a little, then flutter up to a small branch and flutter a little more. I don’t supposed you want to ice up, if you’re a little bird.

Snowed off and on all day. Not heavily, but steadily for perhaps half an hour a couple times. We probably got another couple inches of snowfall. Not a lot of birds out—at least not conspicuous ones.

Cleared off earlier this evening, and the wind is howling out there just now. Tomorrow’s gonna be a cold and windy one.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
