Busy day. Wet out. Warmish. Thawy. Heard crows hollering at something walked out back with my binoculars and camera, and there in the woods sat an adult red-tailed hawk. Too far among the trees to get a photo, but I think it was eating a little something.
Saw a chickadee pulling up. Did not see a pileated woodpecker on the big dead tree, but wood-chip were sprinkled in heaps on the snow around its trunk.
The snow had compacted some on the snowshoe track, so I wore no snowshoes. Kind of tough going, but worth it. Moist, warmish, thawy. Jack seemed to enjoy it—especially the part where we encountered criss-cross deer tracks and he got a good noseful. Heard a flicker, thought I heard an American tree sparrow (not sure enough to list it), did hear the chip of a yellow-rumped warbler. On the way down, we got sprinkled on a little.
And as we were getting back in the pickup, I heard it, the pileated woodpecker, calling from the trees across the road.
