Who knows

American Tree Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 10 December 2014.

American Tree Sparrow.

Busy days, mud and rain, dim light—all that adds up to not a lot of great birding. Or photo opportunities. I did, however, see a little flock of American Tree Sparrows at Beech Hill today during a lull in the precipitation. So much rain has fallen in the last twenty-four hours that the trail had a few minor washouts. Not that the many lingering chickadees much seemed to care.

Tonight it’s still 39 degrees (F). Warm compared to recently.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Slaty blue

Inbound ferry, from Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 December 2014.

Inbound ferry.

A working Saturday, inside by the fire while a cold rain fell outside. Didn’t get up and out until late.

Evening trail, from Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 December 2014.

Evening trail.

As Jack and I hiked the Beech Hill trail—the only ones there (although I did one set of footprints)—the light dimmed into deep, slaty blue. Heard a finch-like call and saw a small bird fly over, don’t know what it was. Heard a chickadee and a Pileated Woodpecker.

Coming back down, I heard the subtle see! of a couple of tree sparrows. Happened to spot one flitting off in the soggy brush.

Lonesome trail

Botanical, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 05 December 2013.

Botanical.

I learned something new today—something you’d’ve thought I’d know by now, considering my interest in nature and time and the spheres. Turns out that the earliest sunset of the year hereabouts does not occur at the winter solstice—it occurs, well, right about now. (Actually, I think, this coming weekend.) It’s because the spinning of the earth when compared to the movement of the varies a little day to day, and the photoperiod will actually begin lagging a little. So sunrise will continue getting later and later, while sunset will begin edging forward a tiny bit.

Birch

Hard to explain, but kind of cool.

Anyway, the seasonal darkness combined with a thick overcast today made for a dark, lonesome hike up Beech Hill with dog this afternoon. I saw a single small shadowy bird flit across the dim trail. It made a slight sound like a tree sparrow, but I damn well couldn’t tell you for sure.
