Temps in the 30s (F) this bright day, with a howling wind. On this morning’s hike, I heard crows but saw only about a half dozen Snow Buntings. First, I heard their bubbly flight call, and four flew past against the wind. Next, I heard the descending note they give sometimes in flight—sort of like a flicker’s call, but fainter—and spied one flying far overhead. Finally, Jack and I flushed one on the trail about forty feet ahead of us. Had I been paying attention instead of playing around taking pictures of our shadows, I might’ve had a great photo op.
Instead—on a second, afternoon hike (still cold and windy)—I got a photo of a crow in an oak.
