Turkey tail fungi on stump, Beech Hill, Rockport, 15 March 2010.

Turkey tail fungi on stump.

Windy, chilly, drizzly, soggy. That about describes this morning. In the side yard, my shoe sunk a good four or five inches into a patch of lawn that’s usually high and dry. More good pickin’s for woodcocks, was my thought.

Chickawaukie Lake, from Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 15 March 2010.

Chickawaukie Lake.

Things dried up a big by midday, though, about the time a fast midday walk up and down Beech Hill paid off with my inaugural turkey vulture for 2010. The species has been sighted for a week or more in the Camden Hills, true, but this particular bird, teetering against the rippling gray sky, was a first for me.

The quick hike also paid off with a half dozen ticks or so—but on me and the dog. Plucked them all off, I’m pretty sure, but still.

Robins were hanging around the sumac. Chickadees in the hardwoods. Heard herring gulls down around the cow pasture. I didn’t hear the mourning dove at midday, but I heard crows.
