F-f-frigid

American Crow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 January 2015.

American Crow.

Seven degrees (F) first thing. A big moon set, a hazy sun rose. Woke up early, worked until daylight, had breakfast, drove to the studio.

At midday, Jack and I took a hike. Not as windy as yesterday (not at all), but colder. Even the little breeze I felt on my face and fingers at the summit of Beech Hill stung like a laceration. (I don’t wear gloves on very cold days, because my hands stay warmer just being pulled up into my sleeves.)

Chilly summit, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 January 2015.

Chilly summit.

No other people, no other dogs, and no birds at all until I happened to spot a gang of gulls from the summit wheeling in a circle off toward the bay. Then, nearing the parking lot again, I heard the croak of a raven. (Also, in quick succession, crow, cardinal, chickadee.)

Tonight is nippy still. And I’m sleepy early.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
