Gray Ghost

Tuesday, March 25th, 2014
Gray Ghost (Northern Harrier), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 25 March 2014.

Northern Harrier.

Cold day, but not quite as cold as yesterday. Windy, but not quite as windy. A snow flurry blew through, but mostly it was clear. It really does feel like spring.

The light is somehow brighter at its current angle, the photoperiod longer. I saw a cardinal, heard a song sparrow, heard a house finch, saw robins. I also worked a lot and didn’t make it up Beech Hill with dog until later in the day.

The ice on the trail dwindles. The wind was gusty. And I saw a northern harrier—a male, a gray ghost. It surprised me when it lifted off and I didn’t get the best photo and stomped around a little feeling unlucky, but then I spotted it again flying away and at least got something of a record.

Tomorrow it’s supposed to snow.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
