American crow, Camden, Maine, 02 January 2014.

American crow in Camden.

The forecast called for low temperatures and the arrival of some snow. Looked out the window first thing and saw fine, swirling snowflakes, with maybe an inch having fallen. Checked the outdoor thermometer, which showed about a negative four (F). Saw also that it was a little windy out there. Figured I’d head out early.

Jack

Jack

Took Jack, fired up the pickup, headed to town for errands. The grocery store was pretty crowded, considering the ominous weather—or, more likely, because of it. Ran into a friend in there, emerged with ample supplies.

Then headed to Beech Hill. Perhaps needless to say, dog and I were the only ones crazy enough to hike up there, but there were a few birds. Heard a couple chickadees, then spotted a northern flicker, then saw three crows fly over. The wind was whipping up there, dipping the wind-chill to who knows what, but remarkably it didn’t feel much colder to me than, say the mid-twenties (under similar windy conditions). Jack enjoyed dashing about. I walked fast. My forehead did get a little painful at one point. No harm done.

Headed to Camden to tackle a chore. Saw a crow and a rock dove. Got back home and hunkered down.

Which is where, this windy, snowy night, I remain.
