Took a mid-afternoon hike with two dogs at Beech Hill, where I identified a handful of bird species, mingled with a lot of humans and not a few other canines. One of the dogs I was walking peed on the other one’s head. Still, it was a lovely day.
Ran into a young acquaintance for the first time in many years—guess that means he isn’t all that young anymore—and at the summit met a friendly couple with whom the dogs and I walked for a spell. Chatted about birds and ticks and climate change and a lot of other good stuff. Kind of the highlight of the day, in fact.
Incidentally, one of the yellow-rumped warblers I saw had a bad eye, but I watched it flutter up and pick off a bunch of flies regardless.
On the way home, I scanned Clam Cove and noticed a pair of great blue herons on the flats, so we took a little detour. Along the tangled banks of the cove flitted titmice and kinglets and at least one cardinal.
I like this time of year.
