Field stubble, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2013.

Field stubble.

Rained pretty steadily last night. Big wind, too. Today, though dawned calm and gray. And warmish. The snow was melting fast. The house finch was singing across the road. And I saw a turkey vulture sail over the hill out back—first of the year.

Snowmelt, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 13 March 2013.

Snowmelt.

Later, while out driving, I passed a dead skunk in the road. Coincidence?

At Beech Hill this afternoon, the trail was runny and the little birds sang: chickadee, titmouse, flicker, even a morning dove.

And now, I await the American woodcock.
