Lingering light

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015
American Tree Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 16 December 2015.

American Tree Sparrow.

Bright, angular sunlight this morning. Long shadows of the trunks of trees. The days are short—but not quite as short when the sky is clear and twilight lingers for a little while.

Worked on some fancy cartographic ornaments today, then hurried with Jack away to Beech Hill.

Everyone else we saw on the trail today were people we knew—well, four of them (two we got introduced to). Also Annie, the dog. Not many birds, but a few, including a tree sparrow on our way back down.

The lingering evening light gave me a nice look at Beech Nut’s silhouette. The air tasted crisp and clean.

Interesting weather

Tuesday, December 15th, 2015
Monhegan from inshore, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockoprt, Maine, 15 December 2015.

Monhegan from inshore.

Rained all night, and the creek did rise. The brook overflowed its banks a little, even—and you can still hear it rushing out there in the dark yard. But the rain let up in afternoon, and dog and I had a date with Beech Hill.

Starburst, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockoprt, Maine, 15 December 2015.

Starburst.

Soggy and muddy and puddly up there. I saw only a few chickadees. In fact, I only have four species on my list today in all (although I did spy a couple of large raptors while driving through Rockport Village on the way to the hill, but I could not ID ’em).

Good hike, though. Thought we might be alone again, but we ran into two other people—and three other dogs.

The forecast has changed for the weekend: no big snow after all, apparently. Such interesting weather lately.

Fog and sparrow

Monday, December 14th, 2015
Spruce, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 14 December 2015.

Spruce.

Drizzly, misty day. Temps rising up toward 40 (F). Oddly, I saw no birds at all today—and I only heard three species. Lots of fog around, though, so it kind of figures.

Beech Nut.

The coolest “sighting” was the high, thin note of a tree sparrow at Beech Hill when Jack and I hiked there late in the day. Those little guys have been everywhere lately, it seems.

Nobody else on the hill but us today.
