In my ten days or so in Utah, I’ve gotten to know quite a few local birds. And I by “local,” I mean near neighbors. Of all of them—the magpies, finches, sparrows, hummingbirds—the most ubiquitous of the lot seem to be the California quail.
I’ve seen them every day on my block, the quail family—in the tall grass, on my lawn, in the middle of the street. Adults and a covey of little kiddos scampering around like human children.
Today I tried imitating with my tongue their little click! notes of alarm. Seemed to work pretty well. Will try again and report back.
Tomorrow is mountain hike day. Can hardly wait.
