It looks sort of like a whale, floating out there on the southern horizon. I’m talking about Monhegan Island, as seen from Beech Hill Preserve. During migration, Monhegan is my favorite birding spot on the planet, with great numbers and varieties of birds, along the inevitably enthralling vagrant.
It’s nice that I can mention the island—which sits about 10 miles south of Port Clyde—on a day like today, a day full of wind and rain, a day that delivered only a couple of crows on my daily hike with Jack. Monhegan reminds me that this day qualifies as an anomaly.
