Deluge

String of pearls, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 09 December 2014.

String of pearls.

Weather on the way. Drippy and gray this morning, with a little slush on the road. Thirty-three degrees (F). A nor’easter is coming, or so they say—including a new friend and colleague who happens to be a meteorologist. We were to get rain, mostly. Lots of it.

And so it was. I time my Beech Hill hike with dog to correspond with a little lull in the precipitation, and it worked out pretty well. Got a little wet, but nothing like the soaking we’d be enduring had we waited until tonight to go. Driving, pounding rain and high wind. It’s the kind of storm that reveals roof leaks that only make an appearance every two or three years.

Never mind all that, though—I saw three birds on the hill.

Beech Hill List
Beginning at 2:30 p.m., I hiked the open trail.

1. Black-capped Chickadee
2. Hairy Woodpecker
3. Northern Flicker

Elsewhere

4. American Crow
5. Herring Gull
