I had plans for this lovely Saturday afternoon, so Jack and I took our daily Beech Hill hike late this lovely Saturday morning. We sure weren’t the only ones who had that idea—the hill was hoppin’ with grownups, kids, and dogs. Just as we started up along the road, a little flock of bluebirds showed up, calling their clear, sweet, subtle notes and flitting by ones and twos through the bare branches of the small trees on the edge of the lower field. Wanted a photo but couldn’t manage one. I was pretty sure I also heard the chip of a yellow-rump down there but didn’t catch sight of it.
On up the trail, I watched crows flapping down the southern slope. Heard more bluebirds down there, too.
Back at the parking lot—yes, fast hike—I heard the yellow-rump again and spotted two of the little warblers zipping away to the southwest. Also spotted a goldfinch and heard a golden-crowned kinglet.
Back home, chickadees and crows and titmice were active around my place. Especially chickadees.
