Backyard Deer

Whitetail doe, Rockport, Maine, 02 January 2017.

Whitetail doe.

Minus-6° (F) when first I looked. A little breeze, too. Waited a couple hours before heading to the hill, by which time we had six or seven above, bright sun, cobalt blue skies, and a bit of a northwest wind. Thought sure I heard the chips of a Yellow-rumped Warbler—I’ve seen them often in deep winter—but just couldn’t bring myself to add that to my list.

Back home this afternoon, I was about to let Jack out when I spied a big pregnant White-tailed Deer in the back dooryard. She was eating leftover blackberry leaves. Beautiful animal. Seemed plenty cautious and healthy.

We’re supposed to get a “bomb cyclone” Thursday, whatever that is. We shall see!
