A word about starlings

Sunday, March 24th, 2013

European starlings, Glen Cove, Rockport, Maine, 24 March 2013.

European starlings.

Often I sort of turn my nose up at European starlings. They’re alien species, after all, and abundant as hell, and noisy, and familiar, and sometimes just don’t seem like they belong here. But of course they belong here. And they’re actually quite handsome if you look close enough. Plus, they’re really good at imitating the sounds of things.

Busy day, quiet day. Quick hike up Beech Hill with Jack. Still snow, still chilly—but I can sort of taste spring in the air.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
