Didn’t think I’d see or hear any bird today at Beech Hill. It was a cold one, and windy. The wind knifed down my neck and the cold numbed my face and the golden weed fluff shone in the afternoon light.

And then, as we got back to the truck, I heard the voice of a chickadee.

Beginning at 2:45 p.m., I hiked the open trail.
