An earthly vantage

Thursday, November 1st, 2012
American crow, Rockport, Maine, 01 November 2012.

American crow.

Not much to report today, except the sun came out and the air cooled a notch and a few birds are still hopping around here and there. Jack and I kind of ended up tied to the desk for much of the day, with our only excursion being our dependable visit to Beech Hill.

Fewer hikers than I expected considering the sunny weather. Fewer birds than lately, too—and I didn’t see any of ’em. But I did hear a small flock of bluebirds flying low over the eastern slope and a solitary goldfinch headed somewhere. Otherwise, the usual suspects, pretty much, although no sparrows for the second straight day.

Late in the day I spent a while watching a gang of crows veering around the wooded hillside out back of my place. At one point they all got together to holler at something down low—a cat, maybe—but mostly they were just talking to each other and moving here and there.

Tonight the moon and Jupiter rose very close together. Well, apparently close together from an earthly vantage.
