The temperature hovered in the 20s (F) all day, an overcast day, without much wind. Crows paid visits, as usual, and I watched a couple of gray squirrels navigate their twiggy trails in search of old acorns in the far corner of the yard. About mid-morning, I heard the familiar, muted beeping of a white-breasted nuthatch and headed out to the back deck with my camera. It too, a minute to find the bird, which then came obligingly nearer. I got some shots of it checking out the nuthatch nest cavity of a couple springs ago. Nests have succeeded there, nests have failed there. I rather hope they give it another try this year.
Starting at twilight and into late evening, a very light snow came falling. Forecasts are calling for single-digit lows. Overall, quite wintry.
(The nuthatch was my twentieth 2010 bird.)
