Big Day

Monday, May 27th, 2019
Black-throated Blue Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 May 2019.
Black-throated Blue Warbler.

Thick fog this morning, but it burned off by the time we got to the trailhead. And it turned out to be the best birding day of spring so far. Dozens of species, good looks, nice variety—but I forgot to turn on my GoPro.

Good hike though: first-of-year Maggie warb, decent photos. Fun and fruitful anyway.

Woolly bear

Sunday, October 11th, 2015

Northern Harrier, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 October.2015.

Northern Harrier.

For the second straight day, I took Jack on two Beech Hill hikes. They’re more like strolls, really, when we ascend via the main trail—a dirt road with a steep stretch—but I’m still gonna call ’em hikes, OK?

Wolly bear caterpillar, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 October.2015.

Wolly bear caterpillar.

The day was cool, and the color is getting there, and the hill was jammed with people looking to get outdoors. Saw two harriers, a vulture, many yellow-rumps, jays. Heard a croaking raven.

Also noticed a woolly bear preceding us up the October trail.
