“Merry Christmas, meadow voles.” —Northern Shrike

Cold morning. Breezy. Bright sun. Crow and chickadee. And near the summit, a glimpse of a Northern Shrike.

(Elsewhere, a bunch of birds—including a gaggle turkeys fluttering across Route 1.)

Northern Shrike.

It might’ve been a different bird. It might’ve just been moving through. But I spotted a shrike again on the hill this morning—a nippy, frosty breezy, early-wintery sort of morning. In fact, I spotted two shrikes, which might’ve been the same bird (not sure).

A few other birds also, but the one that sticks with me is the little carnivore.

Shrike on a Spruce

Tuesday, November 27th, 2018
Northern Shrike, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 27 November 2018.

Northern Shrike.

Big wind and rain today, as promised. So wet and wild that dog and I didn’t make it up the hill until afternoon. Got a nice dry lull, too—although birds were scarce. In fact, the only bird I saw was a Northern Shrike—same bird I’ve been seeing, I feel sure—perched on a tip of a spruce in the grove on the summit.
