Warmer

Lesser Goldfinch with sunflower seed, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 08 February 2022.
Lesser Goldfinch with sunflower seed.

Even warmer this morning than in recent days, but otherwise, the same kind of weather—and dryness. More bird species, and decent numbers, yet fewer stretches of icy trails. Another fun hike for dog and me.

Noteworthy was the Golden Eagle I spied circling high in sky above the ridge. More noteworthy might’ve been the absence of deer.

(Running errands in town, I spotted a collared-dove—first in a while.)

Winter Quiet

Thursday, February 3rd, 2022

When dog and I began our hike this morning, the temperature was about 18° (F). No wind to speak of, but clouds soon obscured the rising sun, which gave the air a little wintry edge. Not sure if that’s why, but birds were few and far between.

Deer were about, at higher elevations than in recent days, but the only bird I spied was a high-flying eagle. Dang, was it quiet. The sun finally did reemerge late in our return—and then it stayed for the rest of the day.

Another chilly hike awaits us in the morning. Meanwhile, Maine’s having another lusty winter storm.

Eagles

Monday, January 31st, 2022
Bald Eagle, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah, 31 January 2022.
Bald Eagle.

Started up the switchback a little later than the past few days. The morning was warmer—right about freezing—and the birds seemed to like the (brief) reprieve: dozens of juncos, singing finches, vocal jays, a pair of eagles—the cool thing being the eagles were of differing species.

First I happened to spy a high-flying Golden Eagle circling above the cairn ridge, then ten or fifteen minutes saw it again—that is, I assumed it was the same bird. Turned out to be a Bald Eagle (a species I see far less frequently than goldens).

The bald appeared just to be passing through.
