Slim Pickin’s

Brewer’s Sparrow, East Millcreek, Salt Lake City, Utah 04 September 2020.
Brewer’s Sparrow.

Cool in the mountain shade this morning. Not as hurried as yesterday—nor as fruitful. I blame the fact that the sun doesn’t clear the ridge these days until my hike with dog is more than half finished, and the insects are late to rise. And in these dry conditions (no precip since 28 July), a lot of birds depend on bugs and flies.

But at the end of our hike a little sparrow popped up to present me with the day’s best photo.

Bird Report is a (sometimes intermittent) record of the birds I encounter while hiking, see while driving, or spy outside my window. —Brian Willson
