Wing prints, Beech Hill, Rockport, Maine, 06 January 2013.

Wing prints.

Snowed just a little last night. Had a long working Sunday. Fairly moderate out, and clear. I saw crows harassing a sharp-shinned hawk.

Few hikers on Beech Hill when Jack and I arrived; few birds also. (I did get a nice look at a flicker.) But at the summit, in some of last nights’ fresh dusting of snow, very near Beech Nut, I found traces of the the wings of a bird taking flight—a mourning dove, is my suspicion, from the tracks leading up to the wing prints. A nice surprise on a lovely winter afternoon.

(Tonight, some clouds moved in, and another dusting is going on as I write this.)
