White-tailed Deer, off Meadow Street, Rockport, Maine, 27 October 2014.

Had a quick, late hike with Jack today. Not a lot to report, bird-wise, but I did grab a few photos of waning October.

Fall’s last hurrah

Sunday, October 26th, 2014
Sharp-shinned Hawk (Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 26 October 2014).

Sharp-shinned Hawk.

Another early Beech Hill hike today with dog. Again a clouds-and-sun sort of day and a walk among other weekend hikers. as the sun rose, it warmed the eastern slopes and vegetation, as the breeze came from the west. Dozens of Yellow-rumped Warblers flitted among the bayberry, and a Sharp-shinned Hawk circled above the summit.

Distant barren, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 26 October 2014.

Distant barren.

The landscape just now looks like brush-strokes across a painter’s canvas, all red and green and gold. A late rain shower left a rainbow above the bay, and the horns of a crescent moon gave the darkening sky a thrill.

Even though, technically, autumn has a couple months to go, this sort of feels like fall’s last hurrah.
