Dead ovenbird, near Clam Cove, Rockport, Maine, 22 July 2013.

Dead ovenbird.

I broke my collarbone in a bicycle accident last weekend. Sorry to have missed a couple of days.

Perhaps fittingly—or at least in keeping with the theme of misfortune—the bird highlight of today involved the death of an ovenbird on my back deck. It’s the first bird to have died after flying into a window here, as far as I know.

Beech Hill List
I have not visited Beech Hill in three days. (Bummer.)

Elsewhere
(Note: I haven’t really kept track of birds elsewhere, either—although I do recall seeing an osprey and a kingbird at the transfer station Saturday before the accident.)

Song sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 19 July 2013.

Song sparrow.

Another warm one. Upper-80s (F) here, but warmer elsewhere in Maine. However, the high humidity really made for some oppressive-feeling air. Still, after working in front of a fan for a while, I took a nice quick bike ride, then hiked Beech Hill with Jack, then mowed the lawn.

American crow (panting).

During our hike, I saw few birds, took few photos. Quite windy up there—a warm wind—and everybody was sneaking around, keeping out of sight. Finally did get a photo of a song sparrow and a crow. The crow was panting.

Plenty of blueberries about. In fact, the Coastal Mountains Land Trust will begin selling blueberries tomorrow. Sweet. (Literally.)

We also came upon a smooth green snake.

A thundershower or two might roll through this evening, I hear. Still hot and muggy. Good thing I’ve got plenty of water and a couple good fans.

Chestnut-sided warbler (juvie), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 18 July 2013.

Chestnut-sided warbler (juvie).

Another busy ol’ day. Too busy for a bike ride, even—but Jack and I did take our routine Beech Hill hike. Sun, warm, breeze, a few looming clouds. At first not many birds made themselves apparent. The usual species. Notably, though, a white-throated sparrow popped up at the summit flitted up into one of the spruce trees.

Common yellowthroat, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 18 July 2013.

Common yellowthroat.

Saw young chestnut-sided warblers again. Yellowthroats were also quiet. Did hear a yellow warbler (missing yesterday); did not hear or see bluebirds or waxwings.

Returning, nearing the parking lot, I heard a black-billed cuckoo very near and we froze. Tried sneaking slowly up on it, but I just can’t seem to spot those guys in the thick greenery. Also, maybe my hearing isn’t directional enough these days. Oh, well.

After a flurry of last-minute species (mostly heard, except for a broad-wing, which flew suddenly over), I ended up with twenty-one on my list somehow.

Calm and mild this evening, with a waxing moon.
