Every Day Is Earth Day

Saturday, April 22nd, 2017
Raven in the grass, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 April 2017.

Raven in the grass.

Today on the hill, in a misty atmosphere, Captain Jack and I encountered mud, a chilly breeze, and many flitting birds. Among them was a raven with a morsel in its beak that looked, from a distance, like a nestling bird. The raven flew into a field, dropped what it carried, picked it up again, and flew away—flying low, to avoid crows.

Eastern Phoebe.

We also encountered many phoebes, robins, cardinals.

We also encountered the usual casual litter and trash, which I retrieved as I always do. Only later did I remember that this is Earth Day, and that great throngs of conscientious folks were braving the mist and chill to tidy up roadsides all over the county. I’m proud to count myself among the few who pick up after others.

Although in my world, I suppose, every day is Earth Day.

Finch and Turkey

Thursday, April 20th, 2017
American Goldfinch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 20 April 2017.

American Goldfinch.

Today at Beech Hill, as Jack and I rounded a corner near the summit, I spied a male goldfinch perched in a budding tree. The tree grew below us on the hillside, and the finch sat at about eye level, the far fields behind it. I took his photo and proceeded up the trail, where we spooked a Wild Turkey, which ran away.

White-throated Sparrow.

Back home, I came upon a White-throated Sparrow scratching in last year’s fallen leaves.

Song Sparrow.

Another captivating morning of birding Beech Hill.

18 April 2017—I must, however, edit out the rest of these brief musings (and fix my list), since today I realized I had mistaken a particular phrase of a tiny (but loud) Ruby-Crowned Kinglet for the song of a (louder, and quite different) Carolina Wren.

Embarrassing, since I grew up with Carolinas in my Austin backyard. I both birds sing rarely here, though. So there you go.

These are nonetheless exciting days.
