The Biological Imperative

Friday, April 20th, 2018
Wild Turkeys, Rockport, Maine, 20 April 2018.

Wild Turkeys.

Everywhere this morning I saw the signs—Song Sparrows singing loudly at each other, chases of goldfinches and crows and gulls, the drumming of downy and sapsucker, the puffing up of Wild Turkeys—of the biological imperative.

Overcast Morn

Thursday, April 19th, 2018
American Goldfinch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 19 April 2018.

American Goldfinch.

An overcast morning. Not too cold, not too breezy. Birds about, many birds. Singing, lurking, gathering nest material, mating. First-of-year Ruby-crowned Kinglets today.

No raptors, though, on this overcast morn.

Exotic Sapsucker

Monday, April 16th, 2018
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 15 April 2017.

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

Much chillier this morning, with frost and a scattering of sleet on the mudless trail. Quite a breeze, too—but a lot of bird activity on the hill. Most notable, to me, was a calling and drumming male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, his call exotic and his drumming syncopated.

Elsewhere, I got a look at a little herd of turkeys, pecking away in a field, and two new ospreys arriving.
