Snakes and a Catbird

Monday, September 11th, 2017
Gray Catbird (juvie), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 11 September 2017.

Gray Catbird (juvie)

For the past couple days I’ve seen a good-sized Smooth Green Snake on the same sunny stretch of trail. The first day, I had just said out loud to my dog that we might want to be on the look-out for snakes (I’d seen a couple garter snakes there before), but I guess I wasn’t really ready, because  I couldn’t focus my camera on it before it slipped away into the grass.

The second day, I said to my dog that we should really be looking for snakes right about there—and I didn’t even see the green snake in the sun before we were just about on top of it. It slipped away again. Same snake probably.

Here’s a photo of a young catbird.
