Dark-eyed Junco, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 22 January 2018.

Dark-eyed Junco.

Had a lovely hike with Jack this nippy, overcast morning. I enjoyed a brief staredown with a Dark-eyed Junco, for one thing; for another, my ol’ dog was in a playful mood.

City Bird, Country Bird

Thursday, December 7th, 2017
House Sparrow, Rockland, Maine, 07 December 2017.

House Sparrow.

Today on the hill, in borderline frosty weather, I encountered a bunch of little songbirds, among them a continuing mixed flock of bluebirds and Yellow-rumped Warblers fluttering around the open hillsides. There must’ve been six or eight of the two species combined—maybe more. And for the second time in recent days I heard the booming of a partridge. Weird.

Later, I got my best look at a bird: a House Sparrow in the bushes outside the Good Tern Co-op in Rockland.
