Grouse Surprise

Pileated Woodpecker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 02 December 2017.

Pileated Woodpecker.

This frosty morning on the hill I encountered a pair of Hermit Thrushes. That was a surprise. I also heard bluebirds, heard then saw a Pileated woodpecker, heard a raven (or two), and, most surprisingly, heard a grouse booming—the first time I’ve ever heard a booming grouse outside of spring

Big Rains

Wednesday, October 25th, 2017
Wild Turkeys, off South Street, Rockport, Maine, 25 October 2017.

Wild Turkeys.

We waited for a break in the rain. The wind did not abate. Heard a chickadee on the hill and caught sight of one Yellow-rumped Warbler. Spotted a sparrow that I couldn’t identify—which flitted away down the blueberry barren. Spied a swift, skittish thrush.

Elsewhere, I saw three crows, one herring gull, a small a flock of turkeys, and a large flock of starlings.

Still wet out there this evening.

Northern Flicker, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 13 October 2017.

Northern Flicker.

Missed photographing the Northern Harrier that appeared out of nowhere (as they typically do) this morning on the hill. But I did manage a photo of a flicker by simply standing there for a while.
