Yellow-rumped Warbler, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 12 October 2017.

Yellow-rumped Warbler.

With dawn came the sun, streaming across the chilly barrens of Beech Hill. Also streaming—or rather, flitting—through the hedgerows were many small migratory birds, mostly yellow-rumps.

Song Sparrow, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 12 October 2017.

Song Sparrow.

But I also heard a raven, spied a Hermit Thrush, heard two kinglet species, admired bright-eyed sparrows.

What a lovely friggin’ fall-like (finally) morning.

October Birds

Friday, October 6th, 2017
Northern Harrier, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 October 2017.

Northern Harrier.

Northern Harriers are my favorite raptors, I’m pretty sure. Their dependable arrival in October, their low, graceful, circuitous flight, their close attention to the barrens, even their seeming patience with crows—all add up to the kind of bird you’d just like to get to know. I was delighted to see one roaming the hill this afternoon.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 06 October 2017.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

It made me happy also to come upon little flocks of both Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. October birds, to me, exemplify the perfection of the season.
