Evaporation

Friday, January 12th, 2018
Black-capped Chickadee, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 12 January 2017.

Black-capped Chickadee.

Temps rising into the 40s (F) today, with a good breeze and an occasional drizzle. Outside, thick mists rose from remnant snow banks and floated away in the wind. A ghostly evaporation. Several mostly smaller birds took advantage of the warmth to hold little browsing parties.

Ghostly mist.

Tonight we’re having a soaking rain. How swiftly the snow recedes.

Conjured Up an Owl

Monday, January 8th, 2018
Snowy Owl (departing), Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 January 2018.

Snowy Owl (departing).

Relatively warm this morning—in the high teens (F)—with a light snow falling and only a slight breeze. Jack and I didn’t make it to the hill until much later than usual, but we met no other hikers there. We did meet a few birds.

Outbound SNOW, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 08 January 2018.

Outbound SNOW.

Ascending, I said aloud to my dog, “This would be a good day to see a Snowy Owl.” Not three minutes later, we flushed a young one that had apparently been sitting just over the rise ahead of us. I was sorry to have missed noticing it until it took off, but I did get a few photos of it winging its way out toward the bay.

First snowy of the winter—and first since my one sighting in the Winter of 2015.

Zero

Saturday, December 30th, 2017
White-breasted Nuthatch, Beech Hill Preserve, Rockport, Maine, 30 December 2017.

White-breasted Nuthatch.

Zero degrees (F) when Jack and I hiked the hill this morning. Calm again, though—and so silent that I could hear a Pileated Woodpecker calling quietly off in the trees. A few other little resident birds poking around also

Mama cardinal, Rockport, Maine, 30 December 2017.

Mama cardinal.

And back home, the cardinal family was active in the sunny tangles.
